Ductless Heat Pumps FAQs
Ductless Heat Pumps FAQs
Still rocking that baseboard heater from the 1950s in your home? Well, you might not know it, but there’s a better option that will save you money in the long run.
Ductless heat pumps are one of the best ways the heating and cooling industry is saving you money through technology. We’re going to address a few questions people might have about ductless heat pumps, and why they could be the right choice for some homeowners.
Ductless Heat Pumps FAQs
What is a heat pump?
In short, a heat pump is used to transfer hot (or cool) air to another area of your home. In the summer, a heat pump will pump hot air out of your house to cool it, and vice versa to heat. Instead of using energy to heat air to a certain temperature, a heat pump simply moves air from one place to another.
There are different types of heat pumps, geothermal being one that has risen to popularity in the past few years, but we’ll be covering ductless heat pumps.
A heat pump moves air through “cassettes” which are mountings on the walls that have a blower, and a coil, within them. These are used to heat and cool rooms to specific temperatures, without the use of air ducts. This allows you to “zone” your home, giving each zone a different temperature.
Is a ductless heat pump right for my home?
All homes can be fitted with a ductless heat pump. Even though most manufacturers of HVAC equipment are making condensers and furnaces more efficient, switching to ductless can still save you money.
If you live in an older home and still have electric baseboards or wall heaters, you should consider a ductless system. Many older homes don’t have central air conditioning. So a ductless heat pump would be able to provide you with air conditioning in the summer.
Issues to take up with your HVAC contractor
First, you should consult a contractor to see if your home is a good candidate for a ductless system. If you live in an older home, have an all-electric house, or have no ductwork in your home, a ductless heat pump will probably save you money. You should also work out the savings-to-investment ratio of a ductless system. This will ensure you’ll make your money back on the system within a reasonable timeframe.
Second, talk to your technician about line set routes. Owners are often concerned with the aesthetics of a line set, which can be easily fixed. Instead of having copper tubing hanging off your house, many technicians can install a line set cover, or use downspouts to cover the tubes.
Last, shop around for a good technician. Efficiency rides on how well the unit is installed. Having a reputable company do a good installation job will result in better performance from your equipment.
